Assuming you get 6 months out of a set of pads. XC will last forever but DH is a different story. But with DH you eat through material so fast and the rotor gets so hot, and squeal doesn't usually last long because the braking surface is changing so often.

I used to soak the pads in alcohol and then burn them with a blow torch to get rid of oils :P

I assume thats its the resin dust that is more harmful? I know the carbon particles can lodge themselves in your lungs when inhaled but carbon itself is a harmless element. is this true?
